Welcome to Kim Houston Acting Studios!

The KHAS Welcome Session Workshop is designed to introduce you to the business in a fun, supportive and hands-on environment from a Casting Director’s perspective.

You do not need previous acting experience, and you are not expected to arrive knowing how to audition. Think of acting like learning a new instrument. This is your opportunity to pick it up, try a few things and begin discovering where your interests and strengths may be.

WHAT WE’LL COVER

MEET YOU + YOUR GOALS

Before we begin, I want to learn a little about you.

We’ll talk about your goals, availability, current experience, special skills, languages and interests. We’ll also discuss whether you are primarily interested in acting or would like to learn more about the many opportunities available behind the camera in Production.

This helps me better understand where you may fit within the industry and what your next steps could be.

CASTING 101

With approximately 35 years of Casting experience in South Florida, I’ll give you an introduction to how the business works and what I look for from Talent.

We’ll talk about:

• How Casting and auditions have changed
• In-person auditions vs. self-tapes
• What a Casting Director notices when watching your audition
• Following audition instructions
• Appearance, wardrobe, lighting, audio and background
• Preparation, personality and professionalism
• Communication and being on time
• How Production works and the many different jobs on a set

THEN YOU GET TO TRY IT!

This isn’t just an information session. You’ll have an opportunity to experience several different areas of the business.

🎬 COMMERCIAL — TRY A SLATE

Learn what a commercial slate is and why clients ask for one.

You’ll have an opportunity to introduce yourself on camera, receive some direction and try it again.

We’ll begin noticing your voice, personality, eye contact, smile, body language and comfort on camera.

More detailed work on your commercial look, market, wardrobe and slate is something we can explore later through Commercial Audition Study.

🎥 TV & FILM — TRY A SCENE

Work with a very short line or piece of dialogue.

You’ll try it once using your own instincts, receive a simple adjustment, and try it again.

This is your introduction to character, intention, listening, improv, body language and taking direction.

You don’t have to be perfect. We’re exploring what happens when you make a different choice.

🎙️ VOICEOVER — FIND YOUR VOICE

Step up to the microphone and try a short Voiceover audition.

Without relying on your face or body to tell the story, we’ll explore how your voice, personality, pacing and intention affect what the listener hears.

You may discover an entirely new instrument you didn’t know you had!

WATCH. LEARN. GROW.

One of the best ways to become a stronger actor is by watching other actors work.

In our small-group setting, you’ll have the opportunity to observe other students, hear Casting Director feedback and see how even a small adjustment can change a performance.

There is no “good” or “bad” expected from your Welcome Session.

We’re discovering where you are starting.

YOUR EDITED PRACTICE VIDEO

Your Welcome Session includes an edited practice video from the work we do together.

This is not intended to be a professional demo reel or finished audition material. It gives you something much more valuable at this stage: a record of where you started.

As you continue studying, you’ll be able to look back and see your progress.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

At the end of your Welcome Session, we’ll talk about the areas you enjoyed and where I think additional study may benefit you.

Approximately 2–3 hours depending on group size

Sessions are scheduled throughout the month with weekday and Saturday options.

After registering, you’ll be asked for your availability:

Weekday or Weekend
Morning • Afternoon • Early Evening

We’ll use everyone’s availability to create compatible small groups.
