Film Lab

FILM LAB

Train. Rehearse. Perform. Film.

Build a Professional Demo Reel While Learning How a Real Set Works

At Kim Houston Acting Studios, our Film Lab is much more than a demo reel shoot—it’s a complete actor training experience designed to prepare you for the demands of television and film.

Rather than simply filming a scene, you’ll work through the same process professional actors experience before stepping onto a professional set. You’ll develop your character, rehearse with direction, strengthen your on-camera technique, and gain the confidence needed to deliver your best performance.

Our goal is to help every actor grow while creating professional footage that showcases their work at its highest level.

Learn From Industry Professionals

One of the unique benefits of Film Lab is that our coaches and directors vary throughout the year, giving actors the opportunity to work with different industry professionals, coaching styles, and creative perspectives.

Learning to take direction from multiple coaches prepares actors for the real entertainment industry, where every project brings a new director, new cast, and new creative vision.

How the Monthly Film Lab Works

Every Monday • 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Our monthly Film Lab follows the same progression as a professional production.

Four Classes

Film Lab Training

During the four Monday classes you’ll work on:

• Scene Analysis

• Character Development

• On-Camera Technique

• Blocking & Continuity

• Working with Scene Partners

• Taking Direction

• Rehearsal & Performance Preparation

Each class builds toward your professional filming experience.

Professional Film Day

In months with five Mondays, professional demo reel filming is planned for the fifth Monday. In months with only four Mondays, filming will be scheduled on an alternate day, typically the last Saturday of the month. Exact filming dates and appointment times are confirmed in advance and are subject to production availability.

Actors scheduled to film will work on set with the director and production crew to professionally capture their demo reel scene.

All enrolled Film Lab students are welcome to attend Film Day at the studio for an invaluable On-Set Observation Experience, even if they are not purchasing a demo reel. Observation does not include an individual filmed scene.

Students observe:

• Professional set etiquette

• Camera placement and movement

• Working with directors

• Production workflow

• Real filming techniques

Watching a live professional production is one of the best ways to understand how a working set operates and prepares actors for future filming opportunities.
